The Well
Tereza Sykorova
The exhibition ‘The Well’ transports us to another place through sculptural objects and invites the viewer to reflect on their past, perceive the present and ask questions about the future. In Slavic mythology, the well is perceived as a symbol of time, life, a source of magical power or a portal to other worlds and dimensions. The sculptural objects depict previously created statues in a new context and by placing them in the water they have been given new life.
Tereza Sykorova is a Czech artist who graduated at the University of Applied Art and Design and Architecture in Prague. The essential is that she draws from current issues and her own experiences. Her practice encompasses themes such as human’s relation to the world, the perception of art itself, and the transformation of media. Exploring these overlaps is characterised by experimentation and intermediality culminating in a space installation. Resulting installations are connected by a constant balancing act between an object or image developed by crafts. An important level for her is creation based on the material itself like fabric, paint and canvas. It is displayed in monumental scales and abstract forms. She understands art as a specific way of communication that can open up new questions and allow viewers to look into subjective worlds. During her practice she has produced many exhibitions in the Czech Republic, most recently in Portugal.
