The Female Gaze
When popular media consistently portrays women through the lens of heterosexual cis men, how can we avoid internalising it? What effect does this have on our treatment of ourselves and others? We invited artists to submit pieces that eschew the ‘male gaze’ in favour of the female.
For International Women’s Day, Theatre Deli & Dark Yellow Dot presented ‘The Female Gaze,’ a group exhibition which took place at Theatre Deli’s Broadgate location.
Ming Lu
Ming Lu (b.1993, China) produces works in a diverse range of media, including painting, photography, sculpture, installation and performance. She lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
In her recent works Ming Lu takes inspiration from everyday materials, humorously adopting symbols and language from Chinese history. She uses many ordinary daily objects in her works, such as cosmetics (notably lipstick and facial masks), lingerie, hair extensions, furniture, and food, and transforms them into anthropomorphic playful representations of the female body and the female experience.
Karen Byrne
Karen Byrne completed a BA (Hons) Fashion at Middlesex University and previously worked as a Strategic Planner in the design and branding industry. Interested in human motivations, identity and psychology Karen also studied psychology at Birkbeck College.
Her artistic practice encompasses mixed media imagery and textiles using a variety of techniques to explore ideas around the human body and it’s meanings.

I am Maliheh (Mali) Zafarnezhad, a practiced Irish-Iranian artist in Fine Art, Painting and Mixed Media with more than a decade dedicated experience, a resident of Arts Gateway MK (Art Central), and hold M.A. academic degree in History of Art and Architecture.
Having worked and lived in different countries (Ireland, Germany, Iran, UK), I have been exposed to diverse art, cultural and professional communities during my academic career, school teaching, art exhibiting, and as gallery assistant, curator, filmmaker, editor and graphic designer.
Heiðbjört Bára Borgarsdóttir
A young student from Iceland who is on her second year BA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martin. Looking for opportunities to exhibit her work. With main medium being oil paint, exploring the female body and sexuality from the woman’s perspective. Reflecting on past life and traumas.
Chloe Roach
Chloe Roach is a 33-year-old artist working in London who has exhibited internationally. Chloe has recently exhibited a series of paintings examining maternity and those who played a maternal role within her life; nurturing and influencing, for better or for worse. Her work has been exhibited at Salt and Pegram off the vibrant Brick Lane, various art fairs across the UK, as part of WOW Festival in UK City of Culture 2017, North Carolina, Mall Galleries, Glastonbury Festival and the Royal College of Art.
Eleanor Green
Eleanor Green is a Streatham based artist interested in female identity and the power relationship between genders. Eleanor is a multi-disciplinary artist, working in paint, sculpture, and video art. Most recently Eleanor exhibited in the 2018 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, with ‘Does my bum look big in this?’, a painting of an introspective aubergine, exploring body fascism, and has also exhibited at Somerset House. She is currently undertaking a BA in Fine Art at The Art Academy in London.
I’m a narrative painter who was born and raised in South Korea. I graduated MA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art(London) last year. I had numerous selected exhibitions in London including HIX Award 2018 which I got shortlisted last year. My main practice is about meditating my personal relationship with cultural contradictions and current social issues from a perspective of an East Asian woman. The ideas are usually demonstrated by the surrealistic narratives that I created.
Italian artist from Rome based in Birmingham (UK). Graduated in 1988 at “Liceo Artistico” in Rome and in 1995 in Painting at “Accademia di Belle Arti (Fine Arts) in Rome.
Shaina Manuel is a third year elementary teacher in Blythewood, South Carolina in the United States. She also works a side job as a free lance artist to make extra money and keep her dream of being a professional illustrator alive. Her personal work mainly centers around humans and emotional responses.
Born in East London, raised in Cambridge; I graduated with a First Class Honours from The University of Brighton. I studied Fine Art Painting, and following graduation I attended a variety of residencies. My first residency, by the Royal Drawing School, took place at Dumfries house. More recently I attended a two-month long residency at Organhaus in Chongqing, China. I am now living in Liverpool and running my own business: Kate Kelly, Artist. This allows me to work on a commission basis, painting portraits and more recently large-scale mural projects. My practice is heavily informed by feminist theory and gender, and running my own business
