The Ceremony of Ceramics
Claire Sherston
Connection itself is the essence of my work. The Ceremony of Ceramics came from wanting to encourage others to create their own spaces for shared rituals like eating and drinking: connecting more deeply to ourselves, each other and our communities.
Claire Sherston is a multidisciplinary artist based in East London. Her distinctive pieces seek to conduct connection itself, with her ceramics created to be held, passed around and meals shared from them. Growing up in rural Gloucestershire, Claire was surrounded by fields and forests, and had a deep appreciation and understanding of the vastness of nature from a young age. It was this slow, peaceful upbringing that nurtured a connection to the land and to creating. After studying Printed Textiles at university, and with an initial love for pattern, the transition to taking her printed imaginings over to ceramics was a short yet gratifying leap. From a quiet solo breakfast on a hand made dish, to sharing a special feast with loved ones around huge platters and candlesticks, Claire values the honour of being a part of other’s everyday rituals.
