Supporting Material
Mia Harwood
Displaying work that would have only been seen online or in sketchbooks, ‘Supporting Material’ looks to showcase the smaller, experimental designs that fuel larger, finished works. In doing so, these pieces are transformed into final works in their own right, celebrating and highlighting the importance of the process.
Mia Harwood (b.1999, London) is a visual artist working predominantly with painting and tufting techniques from her home in Hertfordshire. After graduating from Central Saint Martins with a BA in Fine Art, Mia’s work has continued to incorporate a playful element of making, through the arrangement of shapes and components. What’s notable about her work, regardless of its form – is the reoccurrence of bright colours, a soft materiality and instinctive, developmental process.
It’s this specific colour palette and playfulness that sparks notions of childhood, nostalgia, love and personal comfort. In essence, Mia’s practice looks to visually document the sensory experience that accompanies her comforting, intimate environment; heavily influenced by people that occupy her domestic space.
Following her first solo show ‘Selling The Dream’ at 1B Window Gallery, Mia is beginning to expand into the installation realm. This further emphasises the immersive nature of the feelings she’s trying to convey.
