Selling The Dream
Mia Harwood
Working predominantly with paint processes and tufting techniques, Mia Harwood is also beginning to expand her work into the installation realm. Having graduated with a Fine Art degree from Central Saint Martins in 2021, the work she now makes reflects her home studio environment in Hertfordshire through the inclusion of more digital elements. However, the ideas in Mia’s work remain the same as it attempts to visually document her sensory experience of being comforted, either by the surrounding domestic space or the intimate relationships with people who fill them. A reemerging feature within this is her experience of love, making the work increasingly autobiographical. Translating these personal emotions results in a particular use of colour, shape and soft textile. As the recollection of her memories blur into imaginative daydreaming; the visual depiction of the work takes a playful colour theme, free-flowing shape form and interior references.
Using influences from consumer culture and nostalgic media; this installation looks to glamorise the honest nature of my own romantic experience. By responding to the window site, the once intimate moments are sold to the public as the ideal through an aesthetic display, despite the often deeper realities of love.
