We Are Family
CLOWDER
An illustrated journey of life’s contradictions featuring artists: Liz Griffiths, Amanda Horwood, Leah Dyke, Neesha Badhan. ‘We Are Family’ make us re-imagine the terms of a family by disputing the concept of kin-blood and familial ties being the priority and arguably presents an idea of friendship to the forefront for the female artists. They are sisters by heart, rather than sisters by blood. This multidisciplinary show combines the artists individual practices to compliment and criticise each other accordingly, as is the nature of the relationships between members of a family.
“So what makes a family and why? Is it the shared family values, the ability to disagree with respect, the capacity to be yourself and yet belong to a group? Perhaps it’s all of those things and none of it has to do with being blood related.” – Neesha Badhan
Amanda Horwood
Amanda Horwood is a painter who lives and works in Waltham Forest. She uses colour emotionally and tackles human experiences such as isolation, desire, loss, and longing. Her characters are mostly female and are inspired by women she knows, or possess a mixture of real and imagined qualities. She does not start with a theme and her characters are revealed through an automatic process of layering and removing paint.
Leah Dyke
Leah Dyke is an artist living in East London where she has lived for over 30 years. Her work is abstract in nature and mostly oil on canvas. Her work is reflective of her love of nature and expresses emotion and the journeys we have within the human condition. “For me freedom of spirit is key.i hope that shows in my work.” – Leah Dyke.
Liz Griffiths
Liz Griffiths is a mixed-media artist who lives and works in Hackney. Exploring ideas around place, site and identity, alongside the friction between exhibition and inhibition, her work places the ugly next to the pretty, crude marks contrasting with delicate fine lines and glowing colours. Multi-layers in her pieces allow for simultaneously hiding and displaying.
Neesha Badhan
Neesha Badhan is a conceptual artist using found objects and obtained life experiences to reflect her own identity, sense of self and when she finally felt she could call herself an artist. Known for her freelance participatory focused projects at NBAM for the past 10 years. She specialises in reaching people who are otherwise missed out in society and looks to engage as many people as possible by using her interpersonal skills of listening, responding appropriately, true curiosity, encouragement, compassion to develop meaningful relationships within an arts setting.
