Squirming in This Fleshy Suit: Chloe Roach
Chloe Roach
Chloë Roach’s art embraces the unsettling aspects of life – interrogating uncomfortable ideas, awkward moments and worries, making repressed personal thoughts visible. The work explores her relationship with nature, societal roles as a woman, personal obsessions and absence of motherhood. It captures an imagined moment of awkwardly delivered performance, where the subjects are trapped in the paradox of self-consciousness and deliberate exposure. Despite the absurdity of the subjects’ actions, they feign confidence. Themes of shame and defiance are central, as is a determination to understand the thoughts we both fixate on and attempt to conceal.
Is there anything stranger than being alive? Perhaps the answer to that is ‘making art about it’. I’m fascinated by the way people behave, our rituals and the sense of identity we create to give our lives meaning. When are we performing, and how far will we go to feel valued?
