Evolved: Nacheal Catnott
I am a British-Caribbean Artist and Documentary Filmmaker passionate about producing dynamic and thought-provoking content that engages with diverse audiences. I have extensive experience creating short experimental content, many of which have been shown in art galleries and film festivals across the UK.My art practice addresses issues such as race, migration and cross cultural diversity in the UK. I do so through a combination of traditional documentary film techniques and various artist mediums primarily, sculpture, performance and poetry. I am known for incorporating sculptures made from yam and Afro- Caribbean staple food as a metaphorical symbol of the presence of black people in Britain.
Red Puffer Jacket and Yam Accessory is the 1st series of photographs in a collection I’m calling Evolved. Here the Yam has become a materialised commodity and is appropriated in the form of a fashion accessory. The piece is a combination of westernised high fashion and items one may considered to be connected to black culture / trends. Overall I am trying to create an advertisement where aspects of black culture are presented at the forefront.
